Port Royal Port Details

The Wickedest City on Earth

Rich in pirate lore, Port Royal was once called ‘the wickedest city on earth’. An earthquake in 1692 swallowed two-thirds of the town, forming an underwater city that is now being actively investigated and preserved by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.

The spit of sand that later became Port Royal was first used by the Taino people as a fishing camp. When the British invaded Jamaica in 1655, they realised its strategic importance and began to put in fortifications. During the 17th century it was the de facto capital of Jamaica as well as a convenient spot for buccaneers and pirates to discharge looted treasure.

Today, with its sunken city and Naval remnants, it is considered one of the most important historical sites in the Western Hemisphere. In fact, it is the only sunken city in the Western Hemisphere, making it a truly unique and iconic Caribbean harbour.

Montego Bay is an ideal destination for cruise passengers. A host of activities and attractions provide the perfect day off the boat. Few experiences will compare with a day of rafting down the Martha Brae. Or a walk along the ‘Hip Strip’, where Jamaica comes alive day and night with food, music, souvenir shops, water sports and a casino-like gaming lounge. History and culture enthusiasts will enjoy a tour of one of the area’s great houses, such as the 18th-century Rose Hall, where you’ll hear the tale of Annie Palmer’s ghost. Or there is the Bird Feeding Station, a working plantation to explore. So, while few still come for a Doctor’s Cave treatment, everyone finds MoBay just what the doctor ordered.

Modern Development

In 2018, Port Royal became accessible to cruise ships for the first time with the installation of a floating pier system called SeaWalk. This innovative solution allows cruise vessels to berth in the 300-year-old harbour without impacting its fragile environment, offering visitors a chance to explore Port Royal and its environs.

Thanks to Jamaica’s newly completed north-south highway, passengers arriving at Port Royal can reach north coast attractions like Dunn’s River Falls in just an hour and a half – less time than it takes to drive between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.
