Port Antonio – the resort that captivated Hollywood
The port of Port Antonio is in the parish of Portland, known more for its beauty and tranquility, Port Antonio is usually visited by the smaller of the cruise liners.
Here you can take a walk along green and leafy trails, or bath in the fresh waters of a waterfall. Not far from Port Antonio is Firefly, which once belonged to renowned British playwright Noel Coward, overlooking the Caribbean on a hill the panorama is spectacular.
The waterfalls close by are Reach falls and Somerset falls, where you can swim in the cool refreshing water or simply enjoy the beautiful waterfalls.
There are some special hotels in the area, where you can eat a fine lunch and enjoy the sheltered white sand beaches. Up in the hills you will find the Jamaica Palace hotel where you can eat Continental or Caribbean cuisine.
At Boston Beach you can sample the famous jerk pork or chicken, served to you within steps of the white-crested waves. It is one of the few beaches in Jamaica that attracts surfers.
Perhaps you want to see Blue Lagoon, the turquoise color of the water will take your breath away. If you saw the Brooke Shields movie then you will immediately recognize this beautiful location.
You can also plan to go rafting down the Rio Grande on a long poled bamboo raft. Originally these rafts were used to transport bananas from the hills to the port. The ride takes about two to three hours depending on the flow of the river and the strength of your raft guide.
If you just want to go for a walk through the town of Port Antonio you will find a unique shopping mall, the Village of Saint George, which was built to look like a European town with a mix of gothic, Tudor and Art Deco architecture.
Before we forget, there is Navy Island, which we are told was once owned by the actor Errol Flynn, the marina near the cruise liner pier is named after this man who was once famous for his roles in swashbuckling movies including The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood.
